Living well with autoimmunity

Rheumatic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis often present stressors like pain, disease flares, managing medications and their side effects, fatigue, sleep issues, difficult emotions, body image concerns, and managing social interactions. My colleagues at Johns Hopkins and I developed a Mindfulness in Rheumatology program with recorded meditations that specifically address these stressors. Meditations were influenced by prominent meditation experts and shaped by pilot studies conducted in the Johns Hopkins rheumatology clinic.

Research suggests that training in mindfulness meditation can improve pain symptoms and quality of life in individuals living with chronic pain, including people living with rheumatic disease.
