About me

Carly Hunt, PhD

My Approach

My priority is to create a safe and compassionate environment in which you can express yourself freely and feel validated, supported and empowered. I’ll work collaboratively with you to develop an individually tailored plan to help you meet your goals.

My counseling approach is integrative, and I often draw from the mindfulness and acceptance-based traditions (e.g., cultivating awareness of thoughts and feelings, self-compassion, and committed action towards valued goals), strengths-based counseling (i.e., helping you recognize and build upon your strengths), psychodynamic psychotherapy (i.e., understanding connections between early life experience and present-day challenges, and making changes based on that understanding), and cultural humility (i.e., I bring an attitude of openness and humility in relation to your cultural identity and experience, and invite exploration of how cultural factors and social oppression impact your well-being). I also help interested clients build inner resources such as gratitude, spirituality, mindfulness, and meaning in life.

When working with athletes or other performers (e.g., musicians), I incorporate mental skills training as appropriate, which may include:

  • Visualization/imagery

  • Self-talk

  • Building confidence and motivation

  • Setting process and outcome goals

  • Energy management (i.e., arousal regulation)

  • Focusing on the task at hand

  • Dealing with negative thoughts

  • Bouncing back from setbacks
